Back in the day when I was at 6th form I remember one of my schoolmates Joe using media studies lesson time to it’s full potential by creating the name game. He used to write a list of famous peoples names and then read them to you one after the other until you laughed. What was crazy about this ‘game’ was that often you would crack on the first name, mainly due to the fact you’re not supposed to laugh, but also because often names are FUNNY!
I’d forgotten about this game until recently when my brother was talking about how when people say your name at you at a random time it’s actually quite funny! Being the older and more mature brother I disagreed, that was until he responded by saying my name in a sarcastic voice! I flippin wet myself laughing!
My crazy mind got to work on this and I remembered my friend Joe’s ‘game’ and decided to update it for double 0 nine! I came up with the idea of texting random famous peoples names to my mates to see what response I’d get!! After test driving it in a college lesson and leaving my mates in stitches with my randomness I decided to take it one step further…..
My next step was to text … mates the name Dolf Lundgren, the actor who played the classic Ivan Drago in Rocky! Some people knew the game, some didn’t, so I wanted to see if it would either A – bring funny responses from those in the know, or B – start some kind of name battle or meaningful conversation amongst friends who didn’t understand! I chose friends who I thought were more likely to respond randomly to what I put and therefore give me something funny to write about and……SENT!
My first response was from one of my schoolfriends Gilsy he fired back almost instantly another 80’s classic action hero in the shape of Steven Segal! This went on for a little while until he ultimately owned me with his vast knowledge of old school pumphouses!! 2 of my housemates who I’d told about the college incident the night before just responded quickly, probably despairingly of my infantile behaviour! Then 1 of my college mates spent about an hour and a half playing famous name tennis with me as we batted names back and forth..pure jokes, my favourite was probably Jim Davidson!! As he knew it was funny but I felt that I had not managed to get anyone who didn’t understand the game to either respond or to say anything profound, with the exception of Texas who advised me to watch Masters of the Universe clips on youtube to see Dolf in all his glory!!
But as I’d lost hope for the game to catch on with anyone new my mate Thom who’s the drummer for a band called Medallist (yeah google them, electro rocktastic!!) started a barrage of randomness starting with a classic Rod Hull and Emu! I was buoyed by this and felt that it hadn’t all been in vein, and after various name games against my mate Thom I feel my idea was a success! A useless waste of time, but a success nonetheless!
So next time your bored…Play the name game!! Hours of FUN!
Until I get crazy at ya next time keep it Crektik!
